What this kind of evidence can show

Evidence can show that a document exists, a payment was made, a diagnosis or treatment was recorded, or support was provided. Examples include bank statements, therapist letters and PIP evidence. Each may explain part of a situation, but none guarantees a decision.

What it may not show

A document may not show the full impact of a condition, the current position, or every rule that applies to a benefit. A benefit letter may prove that a payment existed at a point in time, but it may not explain why the payment was made or whether it has changed since.

Where someone may see this requested

Evidence may be mentioned on claim forms, online account messages, review letters, assessment letters, decision letters, mandatory reconsideration notices or appeal papers. The exact request matters because different benefits use evidence in different ways.

What to check officially

  • The official benefit page, form or account message should be checked for the exact evidence request.
  • The date, name, benefit, assessment period or review period on a document may matter.
  • If Scotland or Northern Ireland is relevant, the official devolved route should be checked because some benefits and processes differ.

Evidence does not guarantee a decision
