Northern Ireland: Check nidirect Universal Credit guidance for local administration and payment arrangements. GOV.UK guidance may specify that it applies to England, Scotland and Wales.

Three different questions when work starts

  • Reporting: which benefit account or service needs the change?
  • Payment: how does that benefit treat earnings?
  • Other circumstances: have needs, health or other claim details changed too?

One benefit continuing does not establish what happens to another. The official account message or letter is the place to check the reporting route.

What this means

For Universal Credit, most employers report wages through PAYE, but starting or finishing a job is still listed by GOV.UK as a change of circumstances. Earnings can affect the monthly calculation. PIP eligibility is treated differently and is not based on employment status.

For self-employment, earnings are usually reported differently because Universal Credit asks for business income and expenses for each assessment period.

PIP is not a work-replacement benefit. GOV.UK says PIP can be paid even if someone is working, but changes to needs or circumstances may still matter.

Work and reassessment: Current GOV.UK Work Capability Assessment guidance says starting work does not require another assessment unless the health condition changes. This does not remove Universal Credit change-reporting rules or the effect of earnings on payments. PIP has its own changes-to-report guidance.

Who this may affect

  • This may affect someone starting employment, changing hours, changing pay, returning to work after illness, or moving from employed to self-employed work.
  • It may also affect people who get Universal Credit and PIP at the same time, because those benefits look at different things.

What to check officially

  • Check GOV.UK Universal Credit earnings guidance for how wages are used.
  • Check the Universal Credit account for any work-related tasks or messages.
  • Check GOV.UK PIP change guidance if work changes something about daily living, mobility, care needs or circumstances.
